PENWORTHHAM, UK - A tumble dryer set on fire and smoke-logged a garage.  Firefighters were called to Whitebeam Close, in Penwortham after smoke was seen pouring from the garage.  The dryer was wrecked in the blaze with smoke damage to the garage and kitchen.

HINSDALE, IL - A dryer fire was quickly extinguished but left $10,000 to $15,000 worth of damage to a Hinsdale home Monday afternoon, Hinsdale fire officials said.  Hinsdale Fire Department received a call around noon about a fire in the of a home in the 500 block of E. Walnut Street.  “The fire was in the basement laundry room of the home, but we had quick entry since our station is about three blocks away,” said Steve Tullis, Hinsdale firefighter and paramedic. “There was heavy smoke and medium heat, but the fire was contained to the laundry room and put out in less than a minute upon arrival.”

BATON ROUGE, LA - A clothes dryer caused a fire in the washroom of a Charles Street home, according to a Baton Rouge Fire Department news release.  Six people were in the main home when the fire started, but no one was injured in the blaze, the release says.  The flames gutted the washroom and several other rooms in the two-story garage, and caused smoke and water damage to the main structure.

CORDELE, GA - A clothes dryer in an Emerald Apartment caused a fire about 1:30 p.m. today.  Cordele firefighters were continuing to get the home cleared of smoke when this reporter was on the scene.  Chief Augustus Telfair said it would be a little while before he and his men could assess the damage.  The dryer which was charred had been pulled out of the dwelling.

EL DORADO, KS - A late morning fire Tuesday caused about $15,000 damage to a house on North Ohio.  The El Dorado Fire Department received a call at 11:45 a.m.  Upon arrival, the fire was already coming out the back window. Firefighters had it under in just a couple of minutes, said Capt. Ricke Whiteside.  It is believed the fire was caused by a dryer.  There was extensive damage to one part of the house and smoke to the rest.  â€œThe utility room is pretty well gutted,” Whiteside said. The renter was taken to the hospital with difficulty breathing.

COOKEVILLE, TN - Fire in a clothes dryer prompted the evacuation of all residents at a retirement home, according to the Cookeville Fire Department.  The fire was contained to the laundry area, and no one was injured, Cookeville Fire Department Lt. Terry Priest said.  He said total damage was estimated at $7,500.  "The fire was inside the drum of a clothes dryer, and the smoke set off a smoke alarm," Priest said.

HAMPTON, VA - Four people were displaced after a house fire.  The fire started around 2:30 p.m.  The fire started in the dryer in the back of the home, Hampton Fire Department spokesman Anthony Chittum said.  When crews arrived, the homeowners were trying to put out the fire with a garden hose.  Chittum said the fire was declared under control in less than 10 minutes.

WESTON, MA - A dryer fire was reported at 41 Skating Pond Road yesterday around noon.  The mansion is owned by Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, according to the town's street listing.  Fire Chief David Soar said the fire was put out in a couple of minutes, but firefighters remained there for about an hour airing out the house.

CHISAGO LAKES, MN - A Chisago County woman suffered minor burns as fire destroyed her home Saturday evening.  She had reported to authorities that the fire started when her gas clothes dryer ignited, and the fire spread quickly throughout her house.  After the fire call came in, fire departments responded from Lindstrom, Center City, Shafer and Scandia.  The Lake Region EMS ambulance service and Chisago County Sheriff's Office also responded.

Garden Hose Saves Home from Fire - St. Petersburg Times (12/19/2010)

TAMPA, FL - Firefighters plucked a chihuahua named Smoky from a burning house Saturday evening and extinguished flames that started with a clothes dryer.  Tampa Fire Rescue said Herman Brown, 55, and his wife left a load of clothes in the running dryer when they left their home.  A neighbor later heard a noise and went to investigate with a friend.  The two men saw smoke coming from Brown's house and took a garden hose and tried to keep the flames at bay until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived.  Firefighters, told that Smoky was inside, found him unharmed in a closet.  Investigators said the fire probably started with dryer lint buildup and caused $25,0000 in damage.  Tampa Fire investigators said Moore and Harris' actions probably saved the Browns' home and Smoky's life.

VALLEY STREAM, NY - A family of three was left homeless after a fire, which started in the dryer, caused moderate damage to their home Thursday evening.  The Valley Stream Fire Department was called shortly after 5:45 p.m. and first arriving units found smoke and flames in the back of the house.  Fire Chief Joseph Fernandez said the fire took about 20 minutes to bring under control, and firefighters remained on the scene for a little more than an hour.  Fernandez said the fire started in a dryer and spread up a pipe chase to the second floor. Fireighters had to rip out the walls of a closet in a second floor bedroom to extinguish the blaze.  Flames also followed the dryer vent to the back of the house.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - A clothes dryer started a fire that consumed an apartment complex’s laundry room.  Firefighters responded to the Chartwell Apartments shortly after 3:30 p.m. to find the laundry room on fire, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a spokesman for the Fire Department.  They had the blaze under control within a half hour, he said.  The fire destroyed the laundry room, Riley said.

OREGON, OH - A house fire that originated from the clothes dryer in the basement caused an undetermined amount of damage to the Oregon home of a family of nine early Wednesday, Oregon Fire Chief Ed Ellis said.  A child whose bedroom is in the basement awoke to the smell of smoke and woke the rest of the family, who escaped before fire crews arrived.  Damage was contained to the basement, after the flames spread from the laundry apparatus to a nearby piece of furniture.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL - A lint buildup in a dryer vent caused a crawl space fire inside a Buffalo Grove home late Monday night.  The fire in the 400 block of St. Mary's Parkway was put out by firefighters within seconds of their arrival about 11:30 p.m., according to the Buffalo Grove Fire Department.

Dog Rescued from Fire-damaged Home - WVEC Channel 13 News (12/14/2010)

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Two people were injured when fire swept through a Newport News home Tuesday morning.  Firefighters also rescued the family dog.  Crews arrived and found smoke and flames coming from the back of the home.  Those in the home got out; however, one of the residents was taken to the hospital for treatment of an unspecified injury.  A firefighter also was injured.  Investigators say the fire started in the dryer in the utility room.

AVON LAKE, OH - A two-story home burned late Tuesday night after a fire ignited in a dryer around 10:30 p.m., according to the Avon Lake Fire Department.  The occupants were all outside 161 Brookfield Road when the fire department arrived.  The fire started in the basement and extended to ducts, eventually reaching the attic.  Damage to the home is estimated at $30,000, according to the fire department.  Avon and Sheffield Lake fire departments were called out for mutual aid.

CHAPIN, SC - Lexington County fire officials are blaming a dryer for a fire that damaged a Chapin mobile home Thursday morning. Firefighters were called around 8:45 a.m.  When crews arrived, smoke and fire was coming from the home. &nbIt took firefighters 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.  Damages to the home are estimated at approximately $30K.  Investigators say a dryer left running in the laundry room sparked the fire.

TONAWANDA, NY - Tonawanda city firefighters quickly doused a fire that started inside a clothes dryer.  City police arrived at the site first and reported smoke coming from the structure.  “There was heavy smoke rolling out of the house,” said Assistant Fire Chief Joe Bacon.  He said firefighters determined the smoke was coming from the dryer.  When it was opened, flames leapt from the appliance aided by the burst of oxygen.  Firefighters from Sheridan Park in the Town of Tonawanda also responded to the scene while North Tonawanda and Grand Island firefighters manned fire headquarters.

STAMFORD, CT - South End units from Stamford Fire & Rescue quickly extinguished a fire Thursday afternoonthat apparently started because of lint buildup in a dryer, according to a fire official.  Capt. Bill Avalos, public information officer for SF&R, said the first alarm came in at 11:45 a.m., and three engine companies, a truck company, a rescue company and a command unit were on the scene within minutes and responded to the basement of the four-unit complex.  "There was heavy lint build-up in the dryer vent, and that apparently caused the fire," Avalos said. "The fire got into the wall a bit but stayed in the area.  If it didn't get detected by smoke detectors, and if the resident wasn't home, it could have been much worse."

HAMPTON, VA - A single family home in Hampton suffered extensive damage in a fire at around 9:30 Wednesday morning.  Fire officials say a dryer is to blame.  Lt. Anthony Chittum, with the Hampton Fire Department told WAVY.com a neighbor called to report the fire after seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building.  Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 10 minutes of their arrival, however the garage was a complete loss and fully involved when crews arrived on scene.  Two adults and two children were displaced due to the fire.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - A North Charleston family lost almost everything they own in a house fire over the weekend.  The fire was caused by their clothes dryer.  "My daughter had put some clothes in the dryer to dry and had taken a nap and a friend came into the house and said your house is filling with smoke," said fire victim Kimberly Nasce.  In a matter of minutes the Nasce's house was engulfed in flames. Bianca Sancic with the North Charleston Fire Department says she knows all to well the damage dryers can cause.  Sancic says there have been 12 to 15 dryer fires this year in the Lowcountry.

Couple Suffer Smoke Inhalation in House Fire - By Will Harris - Crewe Chronicle (11/23/2010)

CREWE, UK - A MAN and a woman from Wistaston Road, Crewe had a close call after their tumble dryer caught fire, causing extensive damage to their kitchen.  Two engines from Crewe and another from Nantwich attended, as crews used breathing apparatus and two hose reel to extinguish the flames, which had spread from the tumble dryer to surrounding units and a fridge freezer.  Although there was serious smoke damage, it was contained to the kitchen.  The occupants were taken to hospital suffering effects of smoke inhalation.

SALISBURY, MA - A clothes dryer is the likely cause of a two-alarm fire that forced a North End Boulevard family to flee from their home and brought firefighters from across the region to the scene, according to Salisbury fire Chief Richard Souliotis.  Souliotis said the fire, which was reported by one of the family members around 4 p.m., gutted their apartment.  "That part of the building is a total loss," Souliotis said of the apartment.  Dryer fires, Souliotis said, are common, as accumulating lint can heat up to the point where a fire starts.

Police Identify Victim of Fatal Fire - By John Tunison - The Grand Rapids Press (11/18/2010)

FENVILLE, MI - Police this morning identified the 24-year-old victim of a fatal fire near Fennville as Dana Ann Lee.  Lee was mentally disabled and living with her parents.  Fire investigators believe a clothes dryer fire ignited their mobile home about 2:20 a.m. today, sending heavy smoke throughout the home.  Robert Lee, 68, and his wife, Georgia Lee, 63, tried to get their daughter out of the house but could not reach her bedroom before heavy smoke forced them to evacuate.  Firefighters also began searching the home when they arrived, but had to retreat when the roof began to collapse.  Investigators think she escaped her bedroom, but could not get out of the house.

MURRAY, IA - A Murray house was destroyed Tuesday night after a household dryer caught fire.  Murray Fire officials were called to the residence and stayed at the scene until about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.  "When we reached the house, it was fully engulfed," said Murray Fire Chief Aaron Brammer.  "Such a terrible loss."  The house is considered a total loss.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - A dryer fire caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a San Bernardino home and its contents Wednesday morning.  The fire was reported about 9 a.m.  Flames spread from the dryer to an adjacent room before 22 firefighters extinguished the blaze, said San Bernardino Fire Capt. Kevinn Whitaker.  The fire was out in about 15 minutes, Whitaker said.

ORINDA, CA - A clothes dryer fire caused about $80,000 worth of damage to a house this afternoon, the Moraga-Orinda Fire District said. When firefighters arrived at the scene they saw a home garage burning, Fire Marshal Michael Mentink said.  The garage fire started when built-up lint could not properly exit the dryer because the exhaust pipe in the back was crimped, Mentink said.

WIKIUP, CA - Fire that destroyed much of a Wikiup home and garage ignited in a clothes dryer, fire investigators said Wednesday.  Charred clothes found inside the dryer led investigators to identify the machine as the fire's source, said Cyndi Foreman, fire prevention officer with the Rincon Valley Fire Department.  The Manka Circle home's structure sustained $250,000 in damage and lost $200,000 of its contents in the fire, Foreman said.  Fire destroyed the garage and much of the roof.  Heat, smoke and water caused extensive damage inside the house.

LORAIN, OH - The state fire marshal confirmed that a dryer caused a two-alarm fire in Conewago Township Sunday afternoon that displaced eight people, according to fire officials.  A fire was reported at 3:24 p.m. that began in the laundry room, said Strinetown Fire Company Chief Steve Tawney.  Nine fire companies were called to provide adequate manpower, and the fire was taken care of within 20 minutes, Tawney said.  The fire, which began in the dryer, primarily damaged the kitchen and laundry room in the apartment.  An adjacent home had its adjoining wall cut into to help fight the blaze, Tawney said.  Four adults and four children from the two homes were displaced.

LORAIN, OH - A dryer fire sent a woman to the hospital and shut down East Erie Avenue in Lorain Saturday night.  Firefighters arrived to find no flames but a lot of smoke and eventually hauled out the dryer.  A woman who was in the home when the fire started was walking around at the scene but was eventually put on a stretcher and taken away to be checked out for smoke inhalation.

House Fire - WDEF News CBS Channel 12 (10/26/2010)

DALLAS BAY, TN - A 9-1-1 call was received regarding a house fire.  Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) responded and arrived on the scene reporting a dryer fire in the laundry room.  Firefighters extinguished the fire within minutes.  Hamilton County EMS arrived on the scene and treated three adults for smoke inhalation.  According to the homeowner, he was drying clothes and heard the smoke detectors go off and went to investigate when saw heavy smoke coming from the laundry room area.  Chief Marcus Fritts, Dallas Bay VFD, reported the fire started in the dryer's tumbler chamber.

GAINESVILLE, FL - Gainesville Fire Rescue crews were able to extinguish a dryer fire late Tuesday, preventing it from destroying an apartment.  The fire was contained to the dryer and was extinguished with water, fire officials said in a news release about the incident. Officials said the fire would have rapidly become a much bigger event if the residents hadn't been alert and able to quickly identify the problem and get everyone out safely.  Firefighters also said the dryer fire is a reminder to residents never to leave a dryer running unattended and to clean the lint trap frequently.

HUDSON, MA - The basement of a River Street home was heavily damaged this morning after a clothes dryer ignited a house fire, said Fire Chief John Blood.  A resident reported her house was filling up with smoke.  When firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the basement and were able to extinguish the blaze.  Blood said the basement of the home was “heavily” damaged and smoke damage was evident throughout the home.

GLADSTONE, MI - One Gladstone family got quite the scare when trying to do a load of laundry Tuesday morning.  Their clothes dryer got a little too hot when it caught on fire.  The owners had attempted to put the fire out but were unsuccessful and decided to go outside, according to Public Safety.  The gas dryer was a complete loss and there was some water damage.  The culprit for the blaze is thought to be a lint buildup within the dryer.

FRANKLIN, VA - A clothes dryer triggered a fire that destroyed a home on Thursday night.  Firefighters were called at 11:52 p.m. to the home, said Franklin Fire and Rescue Capt. Richard Grizzard.  The loss of the home and its contents was set at $85,000, Grizzard said.  No one was hurt in the fire, which was ruled accidental.

ROYAL PALM BEACH, FL - A dryer fire at a duplex complex in Royal Palm Beach drove homeowners out of their residence for a few hours Saturday night.  Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue responded at 6:18 p.m. to the call.  Although the fire was contained to the area where the dryer is located, the house had a large amount of smoke inside, said Capt. TRENTON, NY - Two adults and several children safely escaped from a house fire late Friday night.  Holland Patent crews responded to reports of a dryer fire at about 9:35 p.m., and said smoke was visible upon arrival.  By 10 p.m., flames were shooting from the rear of the farmhouse, and slowly spreading into the eaves.  By 10:45 p.m., the top portion of the house was heavily burning, and portions of the first-floor ceiling were collapsing.

PETALUMA, CA - Rancho Adobe fire crews called to a residential structure fire early Wednesday morning found themselves battling flames for one of their own: department support volunteer Dawn Davis.  But despite their best efforts, family memorabilia and other property were lost when the fire gutted the attached, two-car garage, fire Capt. Herb Wandel said.  The blaze also caused fire, heat and smoke damage in the adjacent kitchen and throughout the house, Wandel said.  Fire investigators now believe the fire started in the dryer and quickly blew up, creating a glow visible from Highway 101, Wandel said.

MIRA MESA, CA - A fire that damaged a Mira Mesa home and garage was caused by a dryer, said Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.  Firefighters reported black smoke pouring from a garage engulfed in flames.  Most of the flames were knocked down in about 30 minutes.  Damage was estimated at $400,000 to the house, and $100,000 to the contents, Luque said.

SCHAUMBURG, IL - No one was hurt Tuesday after a clothes dryer caught fire in a Schaumburg townhome.  Deputy Chief William Spencer said firefighters responded to a 911 report of smoke at the two-story, two-bedroom home.  When they arrived, they found a dryer on fire, with flames spreading to the rest of the utility room, he said.  The rest of the home had smoke damage, but no fire damage, he said.  Spencer said lint in the dryer is a typical cause of fire.  "A lot of times what we see in dryers, if they’re not maintained, they can build up a considerable amount of lint," he said.  "And sometimes that will catch on fire, and if it does, it can spread to anything that’s around the dryer."

Home Damaged in Dryer Fire - Cincinnati Enquirer (10/4/2010)

CINCINNATI, OH - Union Township firefighters spent the afternoon battling a house fire.  Fire Chief Stan Deimling said crews were called to the residence at about 11:25 a.m.  The fire started in the clothes dryer and extended into the attic, Deimling said.  The damage is estimated at about $40,000, he said. No one was hurt in the fire.

Clothes Dryer Sparks House Fire - KVUE ABC News Austin (10/4/2010)

HOUSTON, TX - A family was lucky to escape injury early Monday after a clothes dryer sparked a fire in their southeast Houston home. The homeowner said she was doing laundry at her home when she saw smoke coming from the dryer.  She grabbed her niece, got out of the home and called 911.  HFD responded and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front and side of the house.  They made a fast attack and extinguished the blaze, but the entire attached garage and portion of the house was destroyed.

LINCOLN, NE - Lincoln Fire Department doused a clothes dryer fire Wednesday afternoon.  Firefighters entered the home from the rear where a dryer and clothes basket were burning.  "The fire load was removed to the back yard and extinguished with two extinguishers," a LFD report stated. Firefighters set up ventilation to clear the home of smoke.

WATERTOWN, MA - An early-morning fire injured two Watertown firefighters and caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to a duplex on Harrington Street.  According to Captain Thomas Walsh, Watertown Fire Inspector, the fire began in a clothes dryer.  A report shows that it started when heat from the dryer ignited lint, dust and other materials that had built up in the dryer’s exhaust vent.  Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement.  They forced entry through the rear door and went in with a fire hose. Damage was estimated at $50,000.

MANSFIELD, CT - Firefighters quickly extinguished a dryer fire that broke out Sunday night at the base of the stairs in a split level ranch. Vancouver, OR - Two pet cats that were trapped in a burning home east of Hazel Dell on Friday afternoon were in bad shape when firefighters carried them outside.  But members of the Vancouver Fire Department and Fire District 6 used pet resuscitation masks, giving the felines extra oxygen and helping them breathe.  The first crew arrived in eight minutes to find the home’s interior in flames that were spreading rapidly throughout the home and producing heavy smoke.  A 16-year-old boy had grabbed one family cat as he exited his home but had to leave two cats behind.  In the end, the inside of the home was extensively damaged, but the outside appeared mostly intact. Damage was estimated at $350,000.  A deputy fire marshal said dryer lint buildup caused the blaze.

CORNER BROOK, NL CANADA - A build-up of dryer lint is being blamed for a fire that has cost a Corner Brook man his life.  The 62-year-old man, who was removed from a residence on Wheeler’s Road with serious burns , died at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. According to a press release issued Monday by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the RNC’s fire investigator has determined the probable cause was a result of a clothes dryer vent hose overheating due to a buildup of lint, causing fire to start in the surrounding combustible materials.

CANONSBURG, PA - Fire crews said a dryer caught on fire and sent flames shooting through the second story of a Washington County home.  The fire happened on Wednesday morning at a home in Canonsburg.  Even though crews were able to contain the flames to just the one room, there was some other damage throughout the house.  "There's a good bit of fire damage in the bathroom laundry area and there's extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house," said Assistant Canonsburg Fire Chief Dave Rhome.

GROTTOES, VA - A mobile home fire in Grottoes has left one family displaced.  The fire began Wednesday morning.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the far end of the house.  The laundry room, kitchen, living room and one bedroom were destroyed.  Firefighters suspect it was a build up of lint in the dryer that caused the fire.  The family of five said they are not sure where they will stay but are thankful no one was hurt.

WEST ASHLEY, SC - A family of four was forced out of the West Ashley home by a fire early Monday morning.  Both the Charleston City Fire Department and St. Andrews Fire Department responded to the fire.  When they arrived, the family had gotten out of the house and smoke was visible.  The first floor sustained smoke, water, and fire damage.  The smoke also damaged the second floor.  Officials said the flames started in a dryer.

CHARD, SOMERSET, UK - FIRE crews have extinguished a tumble dryer fire at a house in the Furzehill area of Chard this afternoon.  They were called to the incident at 2.10pm to find smoke coming out of an out building.  The tumble dryer was severely damaged by the fire and the out building suffered moderate damage by smoke and heat.

VERMILION, OH - A house fire broke out around 1 p.m. Friday.  No one was reported injured according to Vermilion Fire Department Chief Chris Stempowski.  Stempowski said the fire is believed to have started in the dryer in the back of the house.  From there, it spread through the ceiling and up into the attic.  The woman who lives in the house made it out and was treated by paramedics, he said.  He added that she had several pets in the home, most of which made it out safely.

LYNCHBURG, VA - A dryer fire evacuated a townhouse on Lynchburg College’s campus Thursday morning.  About a dozen students were evacuated, authorities said.  Three security guards were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.  Emergency dispatchers received a call about the fire at 7:54 a.m.  It began in a dryer in the townhouse’s basement, said Battalion Chief Ninette Heath.  Heath praised the three security guards, whom she said ensured the students were out of the building quickly.

Alton Fire Department responded at 12:40 p.m. after a neighbor called 911.  "When we arrived smoke was showing," said Capt. OAKWOOD HILLS, IL - A fire that started in a dryer damaged an Oakwood Hills home Saturday and resulted in minor injuries to two firefighters.  A resident at 13 Lakeshore Drive smelled smoke and called for help.  Firefighters found smoke coming from the rear of the two-story home and were advised the fire was in the lower level utility room.  The Fox River Grove and Nunda Rural fire departments provided water tankers at the scene as the home is located in an area without fire hydrants.  Two firefighters from the Cary Fire Protection District were taken in good condition to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for evaluation of smoke inhalation.

KITTERY, ME - A two-alarm blaze in a residence caused significant damage to a single-family home.  Kittery Deputy Fire Chief Jason Lonergan said no one was injured in the blaze at the home.  Radio communications indicated the fire began in a dryer.  The fire summoned units from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, York, Portsmouth and Kittery.  The fire caused the most damage in the first floor of the home, but burned up the side of the two-story residence.  Firefighters used water from a tanker to knock down the fire, but supplemented water by running a hose from a hydrant down the dead-end street.  The deputy chief said occupants of the home would not be allowed to return to their residence.
